War Memorials Project
For the past three summers and with the help of many friends and relatives, I have been photographing and copying the names from War Memorials. I have confined my search to places that have a Leeds post code or pay Council Tax to Leeds City Council. This extends from Ilkley in the north west, Tadcaster and Sherburn in Elmet in the east, south to Morley and north to Wetherby. As my sense of direction is nil, I hope that is correct.
I am appealing to members as to the whereabouts of memorials, which are in unusual places. I do know some are in obscure places, having been removed from buildings before they were demolished; or are still in-situ but that the building has had a change of use. One from Calverley that had been in the Wesleyan Chapel before it was taken down in 1948 was discovered languishing in a warehouse in Leeds. This has been returned, renovated, rededicated, and is now placed in 'The Church in the Garden', Calverley near Leeds.
